1.         In a communication of 17 December 2010, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya, called the attention of the Government of Thailand to information received relating to the situation of the exhumation of Hmong graves at Wat Tham Krabok which occurred in 2005.  This matter has been the subject of ongoing communications with the Government of Thailand, as reflected in the Special Rapporteur’s 2008 and 2009 annual reports to the Human Rights Council (A/HRC/9/9/Add.1, paras. 473-479; and A/HRC/12/34/Add.1, paras. 404-429).  In the absence of a response to his communication of 17 December 2010 within 60 days as requested, the Special Rapporteur sent another letter, dated 16 June 2011, in which he reiterated his concerns about the situation and again invited the Government to respond to specific recommendations. Family members of Hmong people whose graves were desecrated in Thailand in 2005 will call upon a United Nations official to recognize a violation of human rights in a hearing at the University of Minnesota from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 in Coffman Union Theater, 300 Washington Ave. S.E., Minneapolis.

The Dec. 10 hearing will feature testimony from family members, experts on Hmong culture and students who have been working on the grave desecration issue. The Hmong community will petition United Nations Special Rapporteur James Anaya to use his authority to formulate recommendations that will prevent further desecration of indigenous grave sites and remedy the violations against the Hmong community. … Continue Reading

The group has been working since 2005 to resolve a dispute with Thai officials over the exhumation of nearly 1,000 Hmong graves.

The bodies were dug up without the permission of relatives and many were then cremated without authorization. The graves were located in a traditional Hmong cemetery near the Buddhist temple in Thailand where many of the families had once lived as refugees. … Continue Reading
